Il est en cela un témoin privilégié de l'avènement des temps modernes.
Son style et ses sujets allaient le faire reconnaître comme un maître de l'avant-garde,
et quoiqu'il n'exposa jamais en même temps que les impressionnistes,
ceux-ci le reconnaissaient volontiers comme leur chef de file.

Manet was the pioneer who paved the way to a new kind of painting, turning the artists' attention
away from the classical and mythic themes and replacing them with scenes from comptemporary life.
In so doing, he can be considered one of the first witnesses of the advent of the modern times.
His style as well as the subjects he painted, destined him to be seen as the avant-garde Master of his time.
And, even though he never exhibited his works alongside those of his Impressionist friends,
all these painters still whole-heartedly accepted Manet as the symbolic head of their group.
