     Whistler arriva en France en 1855, avec l’intention de devenir un artiste. Mais en 1859, sa première œuvre majeure, « Au piano », fut refusée au Salon et il partit s’établir à Londres qui devait devenir sa base de travail – ce qui ne l’empêcha pas de voyager fréquemment à l’étranger.

      A l’occasion d’un premier séjour qu'il fit à Perros-Guirec en Bretagne à la fin de l'été 1861, il peignit une seule toile, cette peu connue « Seule avec la marée » d'abord appelée "La côte de Bretagne", dont cependant il était très satisfait. Le sujet et le style placent ce tableau à l’écart du reste de l’œuvre de Whistler, mais lors d'un second séjour au même endroit deux ans plus tard, il allait peindre d'autres marines plus dans le style qu'on lui connaît.

     Whistler arrived in France in 1855, with the intention of becoming an artist. But his first major work, “At the piano”, was not accepted for showing at the Paris Salon and he decided to settle in London. That didn’t nonetheless prevent him from travelling abroad frequently.  

     During a stay in Perros-Guirec, in the north of Brittany, at the end of the summer of 1861, he painted only one picture, “Alone with the tide”, previously named "The coast of Brittany", of which he was very proud. The subject as well as the style make this painting rather particular among Whistler’s works, but during a second stay on the same location two years later, he painted several marine pictures that were more in his usual style.
