Whistler occupe une place très particulière dans le monde des artistes de son époque. Bien que très lié aux impressionnistes, et grand ami de Courbet et Manet, il s’est fait remarquer par ses paysages « nocturnes » fluides et évanescents et par ses « symphonies » de portraits en blanc. Le portrait de sa mère (à rapprocher de celui du poète Carlyle) est au contraire une œuvre d’une austérité toute protestante, mise en scène de façon saisissante, et réalisée avec légèreté au moyen d’une palette restreinte au blanc, au noir et à l’ocre. Au moment de sa mort, Whistler était très connu en Europe, et c’est en France que cette œuvre fut achetée. Ce n’est que plus tard qu’elle acquit la célébrité qui est la sienne et aujourd’hui, on assiste chaque jour au pèlerinage des visiteurs américains au Musée d’Orsay pour y admirer ce portrait qui fait partie, en quelque sorte, de l’héritage américain. L’œuvre de Whistler a été soigneusement étudiée sur place au Musée d’Orsay avant d’en commencer la reproduction : cet examen a en particulier permis d’enregistrer la tonalité générale gris-fer de l'arrière-plan d’où sont absentes les notes de diverses couleurs qui apparaissent sur nombre de reproductions photographiques. Whistler occupies a special place among the
famous painters of his period. Though he was closely linked to the
Impressionists, was good friends with Courbet and Manet, he became
better known for his mono-chromatic nightscapes, whispy and fluid, and
also for his "symphonies" of portraits in white.
This portrait of his
mother (to be compared to the one he did of the poet Carlyle) is on the
contrary very austere and sternly protestant, done in the realist
fashion, thinly painted with a palette reduced to basically only black,
white and ochre.
Since Whistler's passing, this has become the most
well-known and famous American painting ; but because Whistler was far
better known in Europe at the time of his death, the work was shortly
after purchased by France. There is now a regular pilgrimage of
Americans who make a special effort to stop at the Orsay Museum to see
this painting, a work which has become,
in a sense, part of American heritage. Whistler's original work has been carefully studied at the Orsay Museum before commencing the reproduction. Thanks to this examination, the real tonality of the background, straight iron-grey in fact, was confirmed, whereas it appears adorned with various coloured tints in pictures of this work in many art-books.
