L'oeuvre dépeint le paysage enchanteur dans lequel Gauguin avait choisi de vivre, ainsi que la cahute qu'il occupait entre montagne et mer. Au premier plan, un paon au port altier semble concentrer en lui toute la beauté de ce paysage idyllique. Un peu plus loin, un homme débite à la hache un arbre mort (en langage polynésien, "Matamoe" signifie "mort") pour alimenter le feu symbole de la vie. L'ensemble de la toile évoque un puzzle aux éléments juxtaposés dont le résultat est éminemment décoratif.

     The work depicts the enchanted paradise where Gauguin finally decided to live.  It also shows the hut that he occupied between the mountain and the sea. In the foreground, a proud peacock seems to signify, in and of itself, all the beauty of this utopia.  Further in the background, a native chops away at a dead tree (in Polynesian language "Matamoe" means "death") to feed the fire which is symbolic of life. The whole of the painting is a patchwork of elements next to each other but connected, as in a jigsaw puzzle, and the result is unquestionably very decorative.
