   Un mois après le combat de Cherbourg, le Kearsarge est au mouillage devant Boulogne. Manet est également là, en vacances avec sa famille. Il en profite pour faire des esquisses de l’événement et il finalisera ce tableau en atelier.

   For this painting , Manet went to Cherbourg one month following the historical battle. Learning  Kearsarge's location was now at Boulogne, he went there and painted a water-color of the ship at sea, after which he painted this work in oil calmly in his studio in Paris.
