" THE BILLIARD ( 1875 ) "

which belongs to a private collection.

Cette copie fait partie de notre donation à la Propriété Caillebotte à Yerres (Essonne), où elle est désormais visible lors d'expositions temporaires.

This copy is part of our donation to the Caillebotte Estate in Yerres near Paris, where it can be seen during temporary exhibits.

     La scène représentée dans ce tableau est située dans le Casin de la propriété familiale à Yerres : ce salon (cliquer ici pour une photo récente) a été conservé jusqu’à aujourd’hui tel qu’il était en 1875, avec son billard et son ouverture sur le jardin. L’espace laissé vide sur la toile devait sans doute recevoir un second personnage et on reconnaît l’emplacement d’une seconde lampe  au-dessus du billard, mais on ignore pourquoi Caillebotte n’a pas voulu aller au bout de cette oeuvre pourtant presque terminée. Par sa composition et sa palette, ce tableau est à rapprocher de la série parisienne des fenêtres à contre-jour qu’il devait commencer peu après.

    The scene represented here is located in the family home in Yerres, and this room (click here for a recent photo) has been preserved up to-day exactly as it was in 1875, with its billiard and its opening to the garden. The space left empty on the canvas was certainly purported to accomodate a second player, and we can identify the intended location of a second lamp above the billiard, but we ignore why Caillebotte did not wish to finish this work at this advanced stage of achievement. The composition and the palette of this painting are very similar to those in the Parisian series of back-lighted windows he was to commence the  next year.
