which hangs in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

     Au printemps de 1890, Van Gogh est depuis un an pensionnaire dans un hospice de Saint-Rémy de Provence, où il s'est fait admettre de sa propre volonté pour soigner son épilepsie. Malgré un équilibre mental vacillant, c'est une période très créative d'oeuvres de grande qualité. Il peint le présent tableau pendant une nouvelle crise : il le décrit dans une lettre à sa mère et à sa soeur comme représentant (malgré les cyprès !) des chaumières du Brabant sous un ciel d'automne, à l'instant où un soleil rouge disparaît derrière des nuages aussi tourmentés que devait l'être son mental.

     Il s'agit d'une toile de petite taille (29 x 36,5 cm) dont les dimensions ont été presque doublées pour cette reproduction. De nombreux essais ont été pratiqués afin de restituer l'aspect coulé et arrondi des applications de pâte. C'est finalement un médium vénitien à la cire d'abeille qui a permis de donner une consistance mielleuse et fluide à cette brillante variation pour les ors et les verts.

     L'original exposé au Musée Van Gogh d'Amsterdam derrière une vitrine sous un éclairage atténué - comme pour les pastels, et bien qu'il s'agisse d'une huile sur toile - a une apparence plutôt terne derrière laquelle j'ai à tort ou à raison décelé les teintes plus vives que j'ai reproduites ici.

     In the spring of 1890, Van Gogh had already spent one year in the hospital of Saint-Rémy de Provence, where he had admitted himself hoping to cure his epilepsy. In spite of a wavering mental stability, it was a very productive period for him, giving some high quality works. He painted the present work while suffering another crisis, and he described it in a letter to his mother and sister as representing (despite the cypress trees !) the hatched cottages of Belgium under an autum sky, the moment a red sun disappeared behind clouds that where as tormented as his own mental state.

     The original is rather small in size (29 x 36,5 cms) and these dimensions were practically doubled for this reproduction. Numerous experimentations were necessary in order to duplicate the rounded, almost poured, aspect of Van Gogh's paint in this particular work. In the end, the choice of a Venitian medium made with beeswax proved to be the answer : it gave honey consistency which also helped bring out the brilliant play of colors between the golden yellows and the many variants of green.

     The original work presented at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam in a showbox under a weak lighting -  alongside pastels and drawings, although it is a genuine oil-on-canvas painting - has a rather dull appearance. Whether right or wrong, I saw behind this appearance the brighter colors I reproduced here.
